Peter Burwik studierte bei Hans Swarowsky in Wien und promovierte zum Doktor der Theaterwissenschaften an der Universität Wien. Weiterführende Studien und enge Zusammenarbeit mit Bruno Maderna in Salzburg und Darmstadt beeinflußten seine musikalische Entwicklung gleichermaßen nachhaltig.
1971 gründete er das ensemble XX.jahrhundert in Wien; seither war er auch Gast bedeutender Orchester im In- und Ausland (Wiener Symphoniker, RSO Berlin, Orchestre Philharmonique Paris, WOS Katowice, NDR-Symphonieorchester Hamburg, ORF-Symphonieorchester, Symphonieorchester des SF-Stuttgart, Rundfunkorchester in Lissabon und Orchestre National de Lille) und bei Musiktheaterproduktionen (Wien, Hong Kong, Helsinki). 1991 bis 1994 war er ständiger Gastdirigent der Mährischen Staatsphilharmonie.
Neben seiner langjährigen Unterrichtstätigkeit an der Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Wien (ao.Univ. Prof. für Interpretation und Aufführungspraxis Neuer Musik) war Burwik in diesem Bereich auch international tätig (Santiago de Chile, Bozen, Caracas, Havanna, Dartington).

Peter Burwik studied conducting at the "Wiener Musikakademie" as the student of Hans Swarowky and earned his doctor´s degree of theatre history at the University of Vienna - he continued to study with Bruno Maderna and their close cooperation in Salzburg and Darm-stadt contributed equally in great measure to his musical development.
In 1971 he founded The 20th Century Ensemble in Vienna and has been managing it as its artistic director ever since. Apart from his regular engagements in Vienna - with the ORF, at the Wiener Konzerthaus, the Wiener Musikverein, the Wiener Festwochen - he and his Ensemble also accepted numerous invitations to well known festivals such as the "Salzburger Festspiele", "Berliner Festwochen", "Edinburgh Festival", "Warsaw Autumn", "Musica" of Strasbourg, "Festival de Lille", "IRCAM Paris", "Huddersfield Fes-tival", "Hong Kong Arts Festival", "Biennale Zagreb", "Musical Spring St. Petersburg", Stockholm, Köln, Stuttgart, Baku, Gent, St.Paul de Vence, Lugano, Geneva, Moscow...
Furthermore Peter Burwik was invited as guestconductor by several important international orchestras such as the Wiener Symphoniker, the RSO Berlin, the Orchestre Philharmonique Paris, the WOS Katowice, the NDR-Symphonieorchester Hamburg as well as the ORF-Symphonieorchester, the Symphonieorchester of the SF Stuttgart, the Radio Orchestra of Lisbon and the Orchestre National de Lille. He was responsible, whilst guest conductor for these orchestras, for numerous premiers of compositions by contemporary composers.
Peter Burwik ended his activities as permanent guest conductor of the Moravian State Philharmonic Orchestra (1991-93) with the performance of Mahler´s 2. Symphony in January 1994.
His resent musical activities include the following projects: Score for "Metropolis" (Lang, Malaton, IRCAM) Music lessons at the Gustav Mahler Academy in Bozen Concerts and Master class at Dartington International Summer School in England, as well as in Santiago de Chile, Premiere of a Chinese Chamber Opera at the Hong Kong Arts Festival, Concerts in Mexico City, Scenic design for "Lohengrin"/ Sciarrino and "Erwartung"/ Schönberg at Vienna Festival 2001 and at the National Opera House Helsinki/ Finland, as well as concerts at the Festival "Vienna Modern".
Since 1987 he teaches at the "Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst in Wien".
His university activities include Master Classes: at the Music Conservatory in Ljubljana, in Santiago de Chile, at the Birmingham Conservatory, in Bozen / Italy with the Gustav Mahler Orchestra, within the Festival de la Habana/ Cuba and at the Simon Bolivar University in Caracas
